In my years traveling overseas I am constantly immersed in conversation, many times learning the local languages, but even more so, helping others practice their English in a free conversation. I have had to learn how to modify my own speech so that it is more easy for a non Native speaker to understand me. And I have mastered being able to do so, through speaking slowly, clearly, and with fewer slang or difficult words, while maintaining grammar and pronunciation. Slowly, I can introduce more vocabulary, but the most important part is that the student is enjoying the conversation, so that they will not become frustrated or overwhelmed by too difficult a conversation, and want to quit.
For this reason I focus on repetition, and balance new content with reinforcement of what has already been introduced.
